A new advertising campaign promoting Peru as a tourist destination is being currently broadcasted accross Europe and North America. “Pack your six senses… come to Peru” is the suggestive title of this campaign, commissioned by PromPeru. It features three simple yet beautiful spots: Machu Picchu, Ayacucho, and Jungle.

Unplugged Season at La Noche

The 5th Unplugged season at La Noche, Lima’s best live music club, is bound to repeat the enormous success of the previous years, as some of the most renowned local rock bands are ready to strip off their guitars of every electric effect and challenge the delicate bareness of acoustic sound.

This year will see, every Thursday from May 11th to June 29th, 7 rock bands deploying all their acoustic flair on the 100% unplugged stage of La Noche (Bolognesi 307, Barranco; Phone 247-2186).

One of the most awaited gigs is undoubtedly that of Leuzemia, Peru’s flagship underground band. Their unplugged challenge (June 22nd) will be a permanent effusion of passion and energy, as was last year on the Unplugged 2005. Founded in the 70s by two brothers, Kimba Vilis (drums) and Daniel F. (guitars), Leuzemia went against the stream since the very first day, playing Spanish rock when every other band was doing English covers. In 1983 they were met by Leo Escoria (bass), who gave the group a much understated punk edge. One year later they had played all over town, changing radically the way limeños felt about rock music. Indeed, many of the rock bands that formed during the 80s were inspired by Leuzemia. After a long 10-year break, in 1995 Daniel F, Kimba Villas, and guitarist Raúl Montañez ran into each other in a ramshackle watering hole named Mamanis Pub. They stepped on the stage, improvised a bunch of old songs, and before they could tell, Leuzemia was back again on-the-scene. This time though, with a more relaxed proposal.

Also performing after the success of 2005 is Tierra Sur (June 8th), Peru’s first reggae band. With 15-years on the road, the band has opened some of the most remembered reggae concerts in Lima: Alpha Blondy, The Wailers, Gladiators. Lead by Pochi Marambio (voice, harmonic, guitar), the band’s current line-up counts other 9 musicians, including a girls-only 3-piece wind section. Much followed by young limeños, their live performances are usually sold-out.

Other much expected bands are Hnos Brothers (May 18th) and La Sarita (June 29th). The former is a hard rock band with a retro 70s sound and a smooth blues and pop breeze; the latter, another experienced participant of La Noche’s Unplugged gigs, is a fusion band whose music lies in equilibrium between hard rock, Latin rhythms, Andean instruments, and the histrionic performance of their lead singer, Julio Pérez.

The 5th Unplugged season completes with Hoja de Parra (May 11th), The Emergency Blanket (May 25th), and Bareto (June 15th).
